FSSAI has said that to check for presence of starch in sweets, one can add a few drops of iodine into a solution of the sweet sample and water. If it turns blue/purple, the milk used was adulterated. To check for presence of detergent, vigorously shake dissolved sweet and water, and if it forms a dense lather, it's adulterated.
