How can people protect and heal chapped lips in winter?

Chapped lips worsen in winter because cold air and indoor heating pull moisture out of thin lip skin, which has no oil glands. Dermatologists advise using thick petroleum- or ceramide-based lip balms, applying a heavy layer before bed, avoiding lip-licking, drinking enough water, using SPF lip balm even in winter, and sleeping with humidifier to prevent cracks, stinging and bleeding.
