FSSAI ordered food businesses against using rusted, chipped or damaged knives to prevent both physical and chemical contamination. Rust flakes and chipped fragments can mix with food, posing a choking hazard or causing injury to mouth and digestive tract, as per published research. Experts said rusted surfaces may harbour food particles and microorganisms while tiny cracks can breed bacteria.
