How dangerous is Pneumonic plague and how does it spread?

Pneumonic plague is a severe lung infection caused by Yersinia pestis and the only plague form that can spread directly between people through respiratory particles. It can become fatal within 18–24 hours if untreated, but prompt antibiotics can save lives. Despite a recent unexplained death in Siberia, no plague outbreak has been confirmed.
