Strait of Hormuz closure also caused a food crisis in the Gulf. Within first 72 hours, container ship arrivals at hubs reportedly plunged by as much as 80%. Air freight and overland routes became only alternatives, but they came at steep premium. Although some countries hold strategic reserves of staples, these buffers don't extend to fresh and diverse food items.
