WhatsApp allows users to find their friends by instantly showing whether they're on the app after a new phone number is saved on the mobile phone. A team of Austrian researchers used this trick to check 100 million phone numbers each hour, eventually exposing 3.5 billion phone numbers. The team called it "the largest data leak in history".
