How did roses get their thorns?

A study has found that roses grow prickles on stems, commonly called thorns, due to a specific variant of a gene called LOG or Lonely Guy. Found in all plants, LOG genes are normally responsible for making a hormone that causes cell division and expansion. However, these genes repeatedly changed their traits during evolution to form prickles in some plants.
