How did the months of the year get their names?

The names for the months of the year have originated from Roman and Greek history and Latin, which belongs to the Italic branch of languages. January is named after the Roman god Janus, February after Februarius, from februa, namely a purification feast. Several other months, including March and May, are named after Roman and Greek deities like Mars and Maia.
