How did the phrase 'touch wood' originate?

According to a theory, the phrase 'touch wood' is traced to ancient pagan cultures, in which people believed that spirits and gods resided in trees. They knocked on tree trunks to seek protection or luck. Another theory suggests that people knocked on wood to chase away evil spirits. Christians often link the belief to the wooden cross from Christ's crucifixion.
