According to the most widely accepted theory, Alcuin of York, an English scholar, created the system of 'point of interrogation' during the Middle Ages. The mark, a dot with a 'lightning flash' above it, later came to be known as the question mark. A previous theory suggested that the ancient Egyptians linked the question mark to a cat's curved tail.
