It is believed that the tradition of tossing graduation caps was introduced by the US Navy in 1912. At the US Naval Academy's graduation, the Navy gave the newly commissioned graduates their officers' hats for the first time. As the officers no longer needed the midshipmen's caps, they had been using for four years, they tossed them in the air.
