How do people vote in Australia's preferential voting system ?

In Australia's preferential voting system for House of Representatives, the voter is required to mark his or her vote on ballot paper by placing the number 1 against name of candidate of first choice. Then, the voter has to give contingent votes for all remaining candidates in order of preference by the consecutive numbers 2, 3, 4 and so on.
