How do tsunamis form?
short by Anmol Sharma / on Wednesday, 30 July, 2025
Tsunamis are usually caused by undersea earthquakes that shift tectonic plates and push water upward. The waves travel rapidly across ocean and can reach speeds of 900 kmph. As they approach shallow coastal waters, they slow down, but their height increases. Most tsunamis are less than 10-feet-high when they strike land, but they can exceed 100 feet in extreme cases.
