How does skin turn sunlight into Vitamin D?

The skin synthesises Vitamin D from sunlight when the UV rays are absorbed by the compounds inside the skin. Once created, the liver and kidneys convert it into its final form. It is later utilised to build bones by balancing the calcium and phosphate in the body, and to maintain functions of the nervous system.
