How does the 'lipstick index' help predict recession?

The 'lipstick index' is an economic indicator that uses cosmetic sales to forecast recession. The term was coined by Estée Lauder's ex-Chairman Leonard Lauder in 2001, when he noticed women buying more lipsticks as an affordable indulgence during the recession. His theory stated that lipstick sales and economy were inversely related and as the economy worsened, lipstick sales improved.
