A Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) is designed to prevent mid-air collisions between planes. The system monitors the airspace around an aircraft and sounds a warning if there are other planes in the area that pose a threat of a collision. The Traffic Collision Avoidance System is independent of air traffic control.
