After the 1991 Gulf War, India had to "secretly" airlift 67 tonnes of gold as collateral to raise $600 million to deal with the aftermath, with forex reserves falling as low as $1.2 billion However, amid the West Asia crisis, India's forex reserves were at $700.95 billion on April 17. Moreover, India today has strategic petroleum reserves, unlike in 1991.
