How is constipation linked to higher risk of heart attack?

Constipation may increase risk of heart attacks, studies have shown. Changes to intestinal microbiota by constipation, which increases with age, can raise blood pressure. Difficulties in inducing regular bowel movements can raise intra-abdominal pressure, which affects both the digestive tract and blood pressure. Constipation may also stimulate vagus nerve, responsible for controlling heart rate.
