Apple, the world's second-most valuable company, was about 90 days from bankruptcy in 1997. At that critical moment, ousted co-founder Steve Jobs returned and secured a $150 million investment from Microsoft. The deal, along with Microsoft's commitment to support Office for Mac, restored market confidence and stabilised Apple's finances, enabling its eventual turnaround.
