The Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, was assassinated on January 30, 1948, during a prayer meeting at Delhi's Birla House. He was shot thrice by Nathuram Godse. A front page story by American newspaper The New York Times reported Gandhi's death with the headline, "Gandhi Is Killed By A Hindu; India Shaken, World Mourns".
