Long ago, words like ‘tawaif’ and ‘randi’ were not forbidden in civil conversation. It was a time when women of art courted respect and dignity from patrons who sought their attention and affection. That era has passed but you can find its shadows in Old Delhi even today, where Masjid Mubarak Begum was popularly called ‘Randi ki Masjid'. But why?
