SARS-CoV-2 possesses an enzyme capable of removing ISG15 tags from its nucleocapsid protein, a modification critical for innate antiviral defence. By cleaving this molecular tag, the virus restores its capacity to assemble virions, thereby evading the first line of immune protection, as demonstrated by Kobe University researchers.
