How Sensex performed before & after the 2024 capital gains tax hike?

The government is reviewing proposals to change long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax and securities transaction tax (STT) as the Sensex has turned negative since the July 2024 tax hikes. The Sensex's compound annual growth rate (CAGR) reached nearly 34% between 2004 and 2008, when LTCG tax was scrapped. Since the 2024 hikes, CAGR has averaged -4.2% through October 13, 2026.
