How to exchange damaged or torn currency notes at banks?

RBI classifies soiled, mutilated, and imperfect notes as damaged ones. Banks are required to accept them in most cases and exchange them for replacement, provided major features are intact. Damaged notes can be exchanged in any branch of commercial banks, cooperative banks, and even regional rural banks. For heavily mutilated notes, the case would be referred to RBI's adjudication process.
