Collaborative research across multiple institutes has discovered how Toxoplasma gondii hijacks a cellular protein called beta-catenin to reprogram macrophages. This triggers toxic mitochondrial leaks, causing cells to burst like grenades and spread the parasite. Blocking beta-catenin with an experimental drug successfully halted the infection.
