Braille was first invented for battlefield communication

In the early 1800s, French army officer Charles Barbier developed a method of 'night writing' using raised dots. The system was invented as a means of night-time battlefield communication among the soldiers. It was however rejected due to the complexity. French educator Louis Braille later worked on the system and developed it as a universal writing system for the blind.
