According to the National Park Service of the US, Amethyst Woodstar hummingbirds can beat their wings 80 times per second, which is among the fastest recorded wingbeat rates. North American species of hummingbirds average around 53 beats per second during average flight. Some species of hummingbirds have been known to fly backward and even upside down.
