IIT Guwahati finds how mustard plants survive drought
short by / on Thursday, 11 December, 2025
IIT Guwahati research shows Indian mustard plants actively shrink their internal water pipes (xylem) by over half during drought. This physical change prevents fatal air bubbles, increasing plant survival. By sacrificing upward water speed, the plant boosts sideways resource flow efficiency. The findings, derived using fluid dynamics and microscopy, provide a roadmap for breeding resilient crops.
