Viruses in freshwater lakes follow seasonal cycles and help keep ecosystems balanced, says a study by IIT Madras and US researchers published in Nature Microbiology. Using machine learning on 465 lake samples over 20 years, they reconstructed 1.3 million viral genomes. Findings may aid in fighting antibiotic-resistant bacteria and improving water and public health management.
