US-based engineers at Dartmouth College have invented a coin-sized device that turns the kinetic energy of the heart into electricity. The invention works by adding a thin piece of polymer piezoelectric film to devices such as pacemakers and could help patients avoid battery replacement surgery, performed every 5-10 years. The team has completed its first round of animal studies.
