In a first, tree cactus goes extinct in US due to sea level rise
short by Swati Dubey / on Wednesday, 10 July, 2024
The United States has experienced its first local extinction due to a rise in sea level, losing the Key Largo tree cactus (Pilosocereus millspaughii). Discovered in the Florida Keys in 1992, the population declined from 150 stems to just six by 2021, affected by saltwater intrusion, hurricanes, and herbivory. This rare cactus still grows in parts of the Caribbean.
