Astronomers have observed a rare event in the Andromeda galaxy, where a massive star, M31-2014-DS1, directly transformed into a black hole without the typical supernova explosion. The star, which brightened in mid-infrared in 2014, gradually faded between 2016 and 2019. By 2023, it was undetectable, leading researchers to conclude it had collapsed into a black hole without an explosion.
