India has formally initiated the construction of a second airfield on Great Nicobar Island, its southernmost territory with strategic oversight of the Strait of Malacca. The new airfield at Chingen, near Galathea Bay, will complement the existing INS Baaz naval airbase at Campbell Bay and is located close to the vital Six Degree shipping channel.
