India has referred to the South China Sea as the West Philippine Sea for the first time in any official document in a joint statement after Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj's meeting with Philippines' Foreign Secretary. Government officials said this mention was made "on purpose". Sixty percent of India's seaborne trade opens into the disputed sea through the Malacca Strait.
