According to the Verite Research think-tank, India has emerged as the top lender to Sri Lanka in 2022 as the country faced unprecedented political crisis and economic turmoil. Of the total $968 million in loans which Sri Lanka received in 2022, India reportedly contributed $377 million to the nation. The Asian Development Bank follows India with $360 million in loans.
