India registered over 21 lakh more deaths in 2021 as compared to 2020, which is about six times the official COVID-19 death toll for 2021, The Indian Express reported citing data by Civil Registration System. India's official count for COVID-19 deaths in 2021 was reported to be 3.32 lakh and COVID-19 was the second leading cause of death that year.
