NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam said India needs to double the number of universities to 2,500 to have 50% of students in colleges. "Today, we've 1,200 universities serving over four crore students, but that only accounts for 29% of the cohort age group," he stated. He added that one university and two colleges were opened weekly over the last decade.
