British-ruled India officially adopted Indian Standard Time (IST) on January 1, 1906. IST is set against a longitude passing through Allahabad at 82.5º east of the Greenwich Meridian Line. IST is five hours and 30 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Notably, even after the adoption of IST, Calcutta time was maintained as a different time zone till 1948.
