India successfully tested its first nuclear bomb, on May 18, 1974, in Pokhran, Rajasthan. The bomb was reportedly similar in explosive power to the one exploded at Hiroshima by the USA during World War II. With the test, India became world's sixth nuclear power, joining five UN Security Council members - the USA, Soviet Union, Great Britain, China, and France.
