India to grant citizenship to Chakma, Hajong refugees

The central government has decided to grant citizenship to nearly one lakh Chakma and Hajong refugees who have been settled in Arunachal Pradesh since the 1960s. The refugees had fled to India to escape alleged religious persecution in Bangladesh. According to Home Ministry officials, the refugees may be given Inner Line permits and not the right to land ownership.
