India contributed nearly twenty five lakh soldiers to the British war effort in the Second World War, making it the largest ever volunteer force in the world. Starting with nearly 2 lakh soldiers in 1939 and rising to over 20 lakh by 1945, the army fought in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Notably, World War II ended on September 2, 1945.
