Indian baby with rare disease wins Novartis' lottery, gets ₹16-cr drug for free

An 11-month-old Bengaluru baby, who was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called type-2 Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), recently won Swiss pharmaceutical corporation Novartis' 'lottery'. The lottery helped her get Novartis-manufactured drug Zolgensma, the ₹16-crore drug that halts the progression of SMA, for free. Novartis provides the drug to 100 kids every year for free under this programme.
