Indian criminal law classifies offences as cognisable or non-cognisable based on police powers of arrest and investigation. Offences are also divided into bailable and non-bailable, where bail may be claimed as a right or left to court discretion. Another classification is compoundable and non-compoundable, depending on whether victims can legally settle cases with the accused.
