A 30-year-old Indian-origin attorney has become the youngest and the first queer woman of colour to take oath as a member of the Oakland City Council in the US state of California. Janani Ramachandran took the oath in an inauguration ceremony held on January 10. She currently serves on the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs.
