Indian-American mathematician Nikhil jointly solves famous 1959 problem

Indian-American mathematician Nikhil Srivastava, who teaches at the University of California, will be jointly awarded the inaugural Ciprian Foias Prize in Operator Theory by American Mathematical Society for solving a 1959 problem. "The trio's breakthrough paper...solves the famous "paving problem" in operator theory, formulated by Richard Kadison and Isadore Singer in 1959," the society said.
