Director Jahnu Barua who led the jury that chose 'Laapataa Ladies' as India's official entry for Oscars 2025, said that a deciding factor for the selection was that the film has to represent India's "social systems and ethos". "The Indianness is very important, and Laapataa Ladies scored on that front," he added. The film is directed by Kiran Rao.
