India's 'double mutant' strain classified as 'variant of global concern' by WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday classified the B.1.617 variant of coronavirus, first identified in India, as a "variant of concern at a global level". WHO technical lead on COVID-19 Maria Van Kerkhove said, "There is some available information to suggest increased transmissibility." The B.1.617 is known more commonly as the 'double mutant' strain of coronavirus.
