India's first IIT, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, was inaugurated 65 years ago on August 18, 1951 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. The largest of all IITs, Kharagpur's 2,100-acre campus has 19 departments, 10 schools and over 10,000 students on roll. Established as Eastern Higher Technical Institute in Calcutta, the institute was renamed and shifted to Kharagpur in late 1950.
