Indian flag carrier Air India was born out of Tata Airlines, which was the first commercial airline in India. Founded by late Tata Group Chairman JRD Tata in 1932, Tata Airlines went public and was renamed Air India in 1946. Interestingly, Tata Airlines carried supplies to Iraq and carried refugees from Burma during World War II.
