Iraq achieved independence from the British rule on October 3, 1932. Iraq was under Ottoman rule from 1533 till 1918 when Britain seized the territory during World War-I. However, the country continued with the monarchy system, which was established in 1921. Monarchy was overthrown in 1958 and a series of military and civilian governments ruled it till 1978.
